Celebrating Black-Owned Wineries in the United States

Honoring Excellence and Legacy in the Wine Industry

February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate and honor the contributions of Black innovators, entrepreneurs, and artists across all industries. At Frederick Wine Club, we’re shining a light on the incredible talent and hard work of Black-owned wineries in the United States, whose passion and dedication are reshaping the wine world.

The wine industry has historically been underrepresented when it comes to diversity, but a growing number of Black winemakers and winery owners are paving the way for a more inclusive future. Let’s raise a glass to these trailblazers and their outstanding contributions to the art of winemaking.

Spotlight on Black-Owned Wineries

Here are just a few of the many Black-owned wineries and brands making waves:

  1. Philosophy Winery & Vineyard (Maryland)
Located right here in Maryland, Philosophy Winery is owned by Kimberly Ellis and Denise Matthews, two friends dedicated to producing high-quality wines with a focus on storytelling. Their mission is to craft wines that bring people together while honoring the philosophies that guide their lives. From bright whites to bold reds, Philosophy Winery is a hidden gem worth exploring.

  2. Brown Estate (Napa Valley, CA)
Founded in 1996, Brown Estate is Napa Valley’s first Black-owned winery. Known for their exceptional Zinfandels, this family-run business blends history, artistry, and a commitment to producing outstanding wines that showcase Napa’s terroir.

  3. McBride Sisters Wine Collection (Napa Valley, CA)
Robin and Andréa McBride are two sisters with an inspiring story and a shared passion for wine. Their collection features accessible yet refined wines, including the celebrated Black Girl Magic series, which highlights bold and vibrant flavors.

  4. Theopolis Vineyards (Yorkville Highlands, CA)
Founded by Theodora Lee, affectionately known as “Theo-patra, Queen of the Vineyards,” Theopolis Vineyards produces small-lot, premium wines. Their Petite Sirah is highly acclaimed, offering a rich and robust taste.

  5. Maison Noir Wines (Willamette Valley, OR)
Sommelier-turned-winemaker André Hueston Mack brings a fresh, edgy approach to winemaking with Maison Noir Wines. His bottles feature unique labels and names, but the wines themselves—like his Pinot Noir and Chardonnay—are seriously impressive.

  6. Stuyvesant Champagne (New York, NY)
Marvina Robinson founded Stuyvesant Champagne with a mission to bring exceptional bubbly to the world. Named after the Brooklyn neighborhood she loves, this brand delivers sparkling wines that radiate elegance and celebration.

Why Representation Matters

Representation in the wine industry is vital—not just to honor the diverse voices of winemakers but to encourage a new generation of wine enthusiasts from all backgrounds to pursue their passions. By supporting Black-owned wineries, we’re not only enjoying incredible wine but also contributing to a more inclusive and equitable industry.

How You Can Support

  • Seek out and purchase wines from Black-owned wineries. Many of these brands ship nationwide, making it easy to explore their offerings.

  • Share your experience! Spread the word about the wines you love by posting on social media or recommending them to friends.

  • Visit these wineries if possible. Wine tourism is a great way to support small and independent wineries while enjoying an unforgettable experience.

As we sip and celebrate this month, let’s toast to the Black winemakers and entrepreneurs shaping the wine world with their talent, creativity, and dedication. Cheers to progress, excellence, and, of course, amazing wine!
